Bereavement Support Group - Back to top
Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County periodically offers a Monday night Bereavement Group that focuses on the period of grief and transition following the loss of a loved one. Guidance is provided toward learning and coping skills. Time is allowed for sharing personal experiences. The public is welcome to attend. The sessions are free; however, a donation to cover the cost of materials would be gratefully accepted. Persons interested in the support group are encouraged to bring along a supportive partner. Pre-registration is not required. Anyone with questions should contact Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County at 785-263-6630 in Abilene.
Bone Density Testing - Back to top
Bone density testing is performed by using a Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) test to determine a patient’s current bone strength. This is done by using a small amount of x-ray. This test can help to detect people at risk for osteoporosis. Detection can allow for treatment that could slow or prevent osteoporosis from occurring.
Cardiac Rehabilitation - Back to top
Phase
2 is an 18-session outpatient program. Patients are referred to the program by their physicians and appointments can be made by calling 785-263-2100 ext.6174. These sessions involve exercising in the rehabilitation department with cardiac monitoring, nutritional counseling, along with educational information that a patient might need.
Each program is tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Phase 3 is a 15-session outpatient program where patients are self-directed and receive minimal supervision. It also takes place in the rehabilitation department.

Cardiac stress testing is an analysis that evaluates the heart and vascular system during exercise. This test can help detect underlying heart disease, which is only apparent when the heart is stressed by exercise. It can also help answer if a person has heart disease and how severe it is. CAT Scan - Back to top
Computed Tomography or CAT scan is an x-ray technique that uses computer technology to create cross-sectional images of the body. By viewing these sections in sequence, the Radiologist is able to create a three dimensional image of the body part being examined.
Memorial Hospital offers state-of-the-art technology with a six-slice CT scanner. This technology gathers information faster and allows for reconstructional imaging and visualization of soft tissues in three dimensions.

A volunteer program in which local chaplains provide spiritual support to patients, family members, and staff. This can include being a compassionate and non-judgmental listener, praying with patients, and offering encouragement and support.

During the six-week class, registered nurses skilled in obstetrics will help you in the following ways:
- Answer your questions and concerns about pregnancy and parenting

Diabetes Self-Managment Education Program - Back to top
This program consists of one-on-one consultations that help outpatients to learn more about managing their diabetetes. A Registered Dietitian and Registered Nurse teach the program and design indivdual plans for each patient. The goal of this program is to enable patients to sucessfully manage their own diabetes.
Diagnostic X-Ray/Fluoroscopy - Back to top
Radiology/ X-Ray is a diagnostic testing procedure that gathers information about the inside structures of your body using ionizing radiation. It is a painless way to obtain detailed informationthat helps your doctor assess your medical condition.
Fluoroscopy captures these images in a video format to produce images of organs in action such as the esophagus during swallowing.

Memorial Hospital offers endoscopic procedures such as an EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or a Colonoscopy. These types of procedures can be performed with comfort and ease as an outpatient surgery. Memorial Hospital now offers Wireless Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy. This high-tech device contains a camera in the capsule that collects data and sends it to a recorder worn on the patient's waist. Images are then downloaded at the physician's office.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique that uses a magnetic field rather than radiation to produce pictures of structures inside the body. It is a non-invasive procedure that creates detailed images of the soft-tissue organs and vessels of the body.

Mammography
is a series of x-ray images of breast tissue. It is a valuable screening procedure that can detect breast cancer early before a suspicious lump can be felt.
The Mammography Department at Memorial Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation as the result of a survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This means that the facility meets nationally accepted standards of care. The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of its practice. Board-certified physicians and medical physicists, who are experts in the field, conduct evaluations and assess the qualifications of personnel and the adequacy of the facility’s equipment.

Be part of the Memorial Health System Volunteer Corps. This organization was established in 1992 and is a member of the Kansas Hospital Auxiliaries and the Hospital Auxiliaries of Kansas. There are over 70 active volunteers throughout the community who offer support services to Memorial Hospital. Volunteers help with tasks such as assisting at the patient information desk, performing clerical duties in various hospital departments, knitting baby caps and blankets for newborns at the hospital, and providing products for sale in the gift shop.

After your baby is born, our staff is available to answer questions and to offer newborn care education during your stay.

The attentive and well-trained staff will answer any questions or address any concerns you may have while here and you may call us if you have any problems or questions after returning home.
A lactation consultant is available to discuss any questions the new mother might have about breast-feeding. The consultant’s service can even be utilized for support after the new mother and baby leave the hospital.

Nuclear medicine uses radioactive substances called radioisotopes (in very small quantities) to produces images of specific organs or bodily functions. This procedure is used to detect many types of cancer, gall bladder function, infections, and even subtle fractures missed on an X-ray.

Having a registered dietitian to counsel individuals about nutrition is just another way Memorial Hospital is “Caring For You.” Inpatients or Outpatients can be counseled on topics such as cholesterol-lowering diets, weight loss, diabetic diets, or any other nutrition-related subject.

This test evaluates the lungs’ functions such as the volume of air that moves in and out of the lungs, and how rapidly the air moves in and out of the lungs. Homecare allows oxygen, respiratory, and ventilation therapies to be performed in the patient’s home. The Respiratory Care department helps patients obtain equipment, teaches them how the treatment should be performed, and shows them how to take care of the machines.

Sibling Classes - Back to top
Sibling classes are available by appointment for children ages 3 and older whose parents will be delivering at The Stork Station.
The class consists of touring the birthing unit, watching a video, "Hey What About Me," and answering questions. Children in the sibling class receive a snack, coloring book about baby, and a picture of themselves to put in their new sibling's crib after delivery.

MHS Rehabilitation Services and Sports Medicine provides inpatient and outpatient speech therapy. Our Speech-Language Pathologists help patients suffering from communication, speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Services are available to anyone from newborns to elderly. This
specialized therapy is offered by Rehabilitation Services and Sports Medicine at Memorial Hospital and Abilene High School for student athletes. It involves not only the treatment of sports-related injuries but preventive education for safe participation in competitive sports, fitness, or recreational activities. The sports medicine program offers concussion management services, providing baseline screenings for student athletes prior to the beginning of the season to use as comparative data in case the athlete has a concussion. Data is compared so the physician may make an informed return-to-play decision.

The unique service that offers special parking stalls for new and expectant mothers is known as “Stork Parking” and it was implemented by Memorial Hospital. These reserved spots around the city are marked with special signs. This is just one of many services offered by Memorial Hospital and The Stork Station.
Summer Youth Program - Back to top
This program is designed especially for students ages 14 to 18 years. This unique program is sponsored by the Memorial Health System Volunteer Corps. It offers students an opportunity to volunteer in various Memorial Health System departments. This is the perfect way for students interested in a health care career to obtain first-hand experience.
The different areas to volunteer may broaden a person’s medical knowledge. For example, a student may learn about blood work in the Laboratory or may experience a new technology in the Radiology department. The student may share invaluable moments with patients in the ROSE unit or may learn how fitness can help people of all ages at Impact Sports and Fitness.
The Summer Youth Program is held from the first Monday in June through the second Friday in August. Orientation is held the first Monday in June.

When your loved one requires a range of non-acute services from skilled to intermediate care, Memorial Hospital offers a Swing-Bed care program. The American Red Cross Gray Ladies - Back to top
The “Gray Ladies” volunteer their time by offering a friendly and personal, but non-medical service to patients in the hospital. They provide hospitality to patients and guests. The “Gray Ladies” organization in Abilene is one of the last American Red Cross Gray Ladies groups left in the United States.
Ultrasound & Non-invasive Vascular Ultrasound - Back to top
Ultrasound
is also known as Sonography. This is a diagnostic technique that uses high frequency sound waves that are above the range of human hearing, to produce images of structures inside the body. Ultrasound produces excellent images of organs that are soft or filled with fluid but is less effective in examining air-filled organs or bones.
Non-invasive Vascular Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the veins and arteries to check for clot formation or other vessel abnormalities.
Echocardiograms are ultrasound examinations of the heart. It allows the technologist to measure the heart wall thickness, chamber size, valve function and blood flow velocities.
