History

Memorial Hospital first opened its doors on October 1, 1922, as the Dickinson County Hospital Company. Capitalization of the original hospital, as well as annual equipment additions and enhancements, were done by stock subscriptions and donations. It was dedicated as a memorial to those who served in the Armed Forces defending our country. In 1959, the Dickinson County Hospital Company ownership was given to the newly formed Hospital District No. 1 of Dickinson County, Kansas, and it remains that way today.

Memorial Hospital has continually updated its equipment and facilities including major renovations in 1949, 1962-1964, 1982, and 1991-1992. Memorial Hospital is a modern and well-equipped primary care institution with a high degree of sophistication in diagnostic equipment, technology, and personnel. The hospital is currently embarking on a new expansion project, which will provide the most up to date medical facilities and easier access for visitors.

Memorial Health System was formed in February 2003 to encompass all affiliates of Memorial Hospital in Abilene, to provide a wide range of comprehensive services for Abilene and surrounding communities. Memorial Health System affiliates are Memorial Hospital, Village Manor of Heritage Village, Heartland Surgery, Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, Impact Sports and Fitness, Learn and Grow Depot Child Development Center, Comprehensive Pain Solutions, and Frontier Estates of Heritage Village. MHS is governed by a locally elected five-member Board of Directors. Memorial's efforts to provide quality care are supported by funds gifted to Memorial Health Foundation by community members.
