History

Memorial Hospital first opened its doors on October 1, 1922, as the Dickinson County Hospital Company. Capitalization of the original hospital, as well as annual equipment additions and enhancements, were done by stock subscriptions and donations. It was dedicated as a memorial to those who served in the Armed Forces defending our country. In 1959, the Dickinson County Hospital Company ownership was given to the newly formed Hospital District No. 1 of Dickinson County, Kansas, and it remains that way today.

Memorial Hospital has continually updated its equipment and facilities including major renovations in 1949, 1962-1964, 1982, and 1991-1992. Thus Memorial Hospital is a modern and well-equipped primary care institution with a high degree of sophistication in diagnostic equipment, technology, and personnel.

Memorial Health System was formed in February 2003 to encompass all affiliates of the Hospital, which provide a wide range of comprehensive services for the community. The current affiliates are Memorial Hospital, Village Manor of Heritage Village, Heartland LASIK Center, Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County, Impact Sports and Fitness, and Frontier Estates of Heritage Village. It is governed by a locally elected five-member Board of Directors that serves without compensation.
