The x-raysRadiology department at Memorial Hospital offers a full range of diagnostic services. These services can provide valuable information for patients and Medical Staff. Tests are scheduled and performed after a physician’s referral. To schedule a test, call 785-263-6660.

This department is staffed with Registered Technologists accredited through the American Registry of Radiological Technologists. Technologists are also licensed by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts. All examinations are reviewed and resulted by board certified Radiologists accredited through the American College of Radiology.

Message from Department Manager

I am Jim Barten, and I serve as the Radiology Department manager for Memorial Hospital. I am excited that this department has the ability to offer so many complete diagnostic tests for the people in this community. Our department is continually updating and utilizing some of the newest, most advanced technology. I welcome any questions or concerns you might have. You may contact me at jbarten@mhsks.org.

Bone Density Testing - Back to top

Bone density testing is performed by using a Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) test to determine a patient’s current bone strength. This is done by using a small amount of x-ray. This test can help to detect people at risk for osteoporosis. Detection can allow for treatment that could slow or prevent osteoporosis from occurring.

CAT Scan - Back to top

CAT ScanComputed Tomography or CAT scan is an x-ray technique that uses computer technology to create cross-sectional images of the body. By viewing these sections in sequence, the Radiologist is able to create a three dimensional image of the body part being examined.

Memorial Hospital offers state-of-the-art technology with a six-slice CT scanner. This technology gathers information faster and allows for reconstructional imaging and visualization of soft tissues in three dimensions.

Diagnostic X-Ray/Fluoroscopy - Back to top

Radiology/ X-Ray is a diagnostic testing procedure that gathers information about the inside structures of your body using ionizing radiation. It is a painless way to obtain detailed informationthat helps your doctor assess your medical condition.

Fluoroscopy captures these images in a video format to produce images of organs in action such as the esophagus during swallowing.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - Back to top

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique that uses a magnetic field rather than radiation to produce pictures of structures inside the body. It is a non-invasive procedure that creates detailed images of the soft-tissue organs and vessels of the body.

Mammography - Back to top

MammographyMammography is a series of x-ray images of breast tissue. It is a valuable screening procedure that can detect breast cancer early before a suspicious lump can be felt.

Memorial Hospital utilizes advanced technology known as Second Look.® This technology uses a computer-aided detection (CAD) system, which improves early detection rates of breast cancer as much as 23 percent. The sophisticated screening tool assists the radiologists by scanning mammographic images for possible signs of cancer. It marks questionable areas for the Radiologist to further analyze.

It is approved for both screening and diagnostic procedures and no additional testing or doctor’s appointments are required. The system is a part of the mammography reading process in the radiologist’s office.

The Mammography Department at Memorial Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This means that the facility meets nationally accepted standards of care. The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of its practice. Board-certified physicians and medical physicists, who are experts in the field, conduct evaluations and assess the qualifications of personnel and the adequacy of the facility’s equipment.

Nuclear Medicine - Back to top

Nuclear medicine uses radioactive substances called radioisotopes (in very small quantities) to produces images of specific organs or bodily functions. This procedure is used to detect many types of cancer, gall bladder function, infections, and even subtle fractures missed on an X-ray.

Radiology - Back to top

The Radiology Department offers a full range of diagnostic services including x-ray, CAD mammography, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, non-invasive ultrasound, nuclear medicine, bone density, and fluoroscopy close to home. To schedule any procedure, call 785-263-6660.

Ultrasound & Non-invasive Vascular Ultrasound - Back to top

UltrasoundUltrasound & Non-invasive Vascular Ultrasound is also known as Sonography. This is a diagnostic technique that uses high frequency sound waves that are above the range of human hearing, to produce images of structures inside the body. Ultrasound produces excellent images of organs that are soft or filled with fluid but is less effective in examining air-filled organs or bones.

Non-invasive Vascular Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the veins and arteries to check for clot formation or other vessel abnormalities.

Echocardiograms are ultrasound examinations of the heart. It allows the technologist to measure the heart wall thickness, chamber size, valve function and blood flow velocities.
